Hi Everyone,
So what run is that? Well, I thought we might get caught in a surprise trail closing in the regional parks with the hot weather, so we agreed to set up an alternative if needed. So our first pick is going to be the Turkey Trot (AKA Golden Spike), with Strawberry Canyon as plan B. The run will start Sunday morning, at 8:30 PSDT (Pacific Strider Daylight Time, a time zone around 15 minutes later than Pacific Time on Sunday morning). Keep an eye on the regional parks site http://www.ebparks.org/closure to get news of any closures.
Golden Spike starts out with quite a bit of beautiful single track trail. I haven't been on it recently, but at times in the past, poison ivy dodging has been part of the action. There is also a challenging hill mid-run that I, conveniently, am in no shape to reach! Water and bathrooms are available just before the hill.
Below are directions to both trails.
Golden Spike: From Hwy. 13 northbound, take the Carson St./Redwood Rd. exit. Go straight on Mountain Blvd, then make a hard right turn on to Redwood Rd. Go straight for about a mile, then turn left onto Skyline Blvd. and go straight for about a half mile until you reach Crestmont Drive. Turn right into the driveway of the Trudeau Training Center opposite Crestmont Drive (If you reach the intersection of Joaquin Miller Road and Skyline, you have gone too far.)From Hwy. 13 southbound, take the Joaquin Miller Road/Lincoln Ave. exit. Turn left onto Monterey Blvd., and left again onto Lincoln Avenue. Bear right onto Joaquin Miller Road, and go straight for about a mile until you reach the intersection with Skyline Blvd. Go past this intersection and continue straight onto Skyline Blvd. until you reach Crestmont Drive; turn left across the road and into the driveway of the Trudeau Training Center.
Strawberry Canyon: From I-80, exit at University Avenue. Proceed east on University Avenue then turn left on Oxford. Turn right on Hearst and go up the hill, then turn right on Gayley. Turn left at the stop sign onto Stadium Way. and left again on Centennial Dr., which proceeds eastward up the hill from the back side of the stadium. Shortly after you turn, you'll see the Haas Pool/Clubhouse parking lot on your right.
From Hwy. 13, follow 13 North all the way into Berkeley, where it eventually becomes Ashby Ave. Proceed on Ashby, then turn right on College. Turn right onto Dwight Way, go up the hill and turn left onto Prospect. Proceed around the stadium (to your left) to the first stop sign. Turn right onto Centennial Drive, pull into the Haas Pool/Clubhouse parking lot on your right.
Have a good weekend,
Mike
