Hi Everyone,
I'm still on weekend run duty and I'm running amok. A new route featuring the central portion of Tilden Park has captured my fancy. We'll be using trails that we haven't been on for a while, or at all. This loop run does have 900 feet of altitude change if we do the ~8 mile version, but offers cut down options to eliminate climb and distance. There are great views from the ridge, and perhaps a good wildflower showing, and good bathroom and water availability.
We will start at the parking area on Golf Course Rd, near it's intersection with Grizzly Peak Blvd. and Centennial Dr. Heading North on Selby Trail, we will run to Lake Anza and continue on Wildcat Gorge Trail to Lone Oak. From there we will start the up hill portion of the run, going up Meadows Canyon Trail, then taking a quick right followed by an immediate left to cross Wildcat Canyon Rd. on the connector to Seaview Trail (also the East Bay Skyline/Bay Ridge Trail). Left on Seaview Trail. The longest version I may be willing to run takes Seaview to the paved road from the Steam Train Parking lot. Turn sharply right onto the paved road then right again onto Vollmer Peak Trail, which will drop us down to South Park Drive. Left onto the drive, then right onto the access road for the picnic areas. We pick up Golf Course Trail at the Elder picnic area, then left on Redwood Trail to return to the parking lot.
Directions to Golf Course Drive
From I-80, exit at University Avenue. Proceed east on University Avenue then turn left on Oxford. Turn right on Hearst and go up the hill, then turn right on Gayley. Turn left at the stop sign onto Stadium Way. and left again on Centennial Dr., which proceeds eastward up the hill from the back side of the stadium. After passing the Lawrence Hall of Science you will come to the stop sign at Grizzly Peak Rd. Proceed across Grizzly Peak Rd and turn into the parking area on your right. From Hwy. 13, follow 13 North all the way into Berkeley, where it eventually becomes Ashby Ave. Proceed on Ashby, then turn right on College. Turn right onto Dwight Way, go up the hill and turn left onto Prospect. Proceed around the stadium (to your left) to the first stop sign. Turn right onto Centennial Drive. After passing the Lawrence Hall of Science you will come to the stop sign at Grizzly Peak Rd. Proceed across Grizzly Peak Rd and turn into the parking area on your right.
From Walnut Creek/Lafayette take 24 east, exit at Fish Ranch Rd, then turn right up the hill to the stop sign. Turn right onto Grizzly Peak Rd for 2-3 miles until the stop sign where Centennial Dr and Golf Course Rd meet Grizzly Peak. Turn right onto Golf Course Dr and the parking area is immediately on the right.
Have a good weekend,
Mike
